So what is it all about?
Taken as two pairs of days as this allows you to train and obtain a full motorcycle licence by passing your Module 1 (off-road) test, before progressing on to Module 2 (road ride). In brief, it follows this format:
Day 1 – Mod 1 training
Details of the Mod1 test can be found on the DVSA Web site here. This test takes place away from Public Roads in a closed-off area.
Starting from our Cwmbran training site at Edlogan Way, firstly, we will check all your documents are in order – the DVSA are not known for a relaxed manner should there be a deficiency in this area.
Then, we explain how the Mod 1 test is structured before it’s onto the “big” motorcycles to gain riding familiarity within our secure training area. We will then go through the Mod 1 “low speed” manoeuvres and give you plenty of time to practice them.
After that, it’s a road ride to Newport Test Centre to use the Mod1 test area for the “high speed” manoeuvres – where a speed of approx 32 mph is required for hazard avoidance and emergency stops. Finally, you will complete an end-to-end “mock” test before we ride you back to Cwmbran.
Day 2 – Mod 1 Refresher and Test
On the second day, we will start in Cwmbran, where you will recap the “slow speed” exercises and have a brief practice. Then we will ride down to our Newport for a quick refresh and practise of the “high” speed. Then it’s time for the Mod 1 test which is at the Newport Test Centre and undertaken by a DVSA Examiner. The test usually takes about 20 minutes.
Day 3 – Mod 2 training
The Mod 2 test details can be found on the DVSA website here. Having passed Mod 1, you have proved your bike control skills, so now it is primarily testing on the public road.
For the start of Mod 2 training, please check your emailed joining instructions, as we start from one of two Cwmbran locations – either the Edlogan Way site or Completely/ThunderRoad Motorcycles.
We will start your Mod 2 training with an overview of how the Mod 2 test is structured and go through some of the areas that can cause candidates not to be successful.
After that, it’s straight down to Newport for a day riding around the common DVSA test routes. You will typically be with one other student and your instructor. Your instructor will issue you with radios so they can direct and guide you throughout the day.
During one of the breaks, your instructor will take you through the motorcycle safety and pillion questions that are part of the test.
To end, you will return to your starting point where we will do a final debrief on the day.
Day 4 – Refresher and Test
We will usually meet at the same location we used for your Day 3 and recap any key learning points from your previous training. Then onto the bikes and back to Newport for a refresher/warm-up ride before arriving at Newport Test Centre to meet your DVSA examiner for your Mod 2.
After that, we head back. Hopefully, you will have a big smile on your face at this point, but if things haven’t gone quite so well, we will guide you through the re-test process.
PLEASE NOTE: You must hold both current and valid CBT and theory Certificates before making your booking.
